Samara Region occupies an advantageous geographic position. The region lies along the middle course of the Volga, the longest river in Europe. The Samara area is characterised by a considerable heterogeneity of natural and geographic conditions. The entire region is situated within the boundaries of the Russian Plain, on the border of three environmental belts: forest, steppe and wooded steppe. Such geographic position determines a great variety of natural landscapes, the presence in the region of the remnants of ancient taiga forests, mossy pine forests, very old turf moors, open steppe spaces, diverse flora and fauna with a number of rare endemic species. Within the boundaries of the region, the Volga changes its course several times, making a great loop to the east and forming a peninsula known as Samarskaya Luka. In the northern part of Samarskaya Luka, the Zhiguli Hills stretch. The Volga divided the Zhiguli massif, which was a whole in the past, into the Zhiguli and Sokolii mountains. The Sokolii Mountains is an upland region along the left bank of the Volga stretching to the estuary of the Sok River.
The Zhiguli Hills are situated in the intermediate zone between the forest and the steppe; they are the only mountains of tectonic origin in the East European Plain. The average height of the mountains is about 300 meters above sea level (the highest point - 375.6 m), but the forms of peaks, slopes, and valleys have a mountainous character. They are formed of limestones and sediments that accumulate on seafloors and on land. Dense forests, among which one can see rocky areas with stone masses at the foot of the rocks, cover the most part of the Zhiguli slopes. Mountainsides, hills with numerous ravines between them, and various rock masses at different depths determine, under the influence of the Volga, special climatic conditions and the variety of soils and plants. The mountainous relief, deep valleys, cliffs and rocks of ancient limestones and dolomites make the Zhiguli Hills both aesthetically and educationally invaluable.
Samara Region is an important centre for raw materials (wood, wild animals, fish, medicinal herbs, ornamental plants, berries, and mushrooms). In the territory of the region, there have been developed about 300 deposits of various natural resources: shales, glass sands, Devonian oil, natural gas, brimstone, gypsums, chalk and other types of construction materials. In the region and within the boundaries of the city of Samara, vast quantities of mineral water have been discovered. At present, the most part of natural landscapes is destroyed by human activity. The survived natural territories were declared to be the monuments of Nature: in 1966 three local nature reserves were reorganised into the Zhiguli State Nature Reserve of I.I. Sprygin, and in 1984 in the rest of the territory the national park, known as Samarskaya Luka, was established.
