During this decade, a number of works devoted to a prominent master of the brush, Martiros Sarian, were published both in Russia and abroad. The present album, brought out by the "Agni" Publishing House, was prepared by the Yerevan Museum of Martiros Sarian. It includes more than 200 colour plates; the literary heritage of the author is supplemented with extracts from his articles, letters and memoirs. In addition, the album includes comments on Sarian's art made by well-known researchers of his creative work. Martiros Sarian belongs to a constellation of innovators who, at the beginning of the last century, discovered and affirmed an expressive potential of pure and rich colour, the colour which originated in the nature of the Orient. In the master's works, tendencies of the most progressive quests of Russian and French painting are interwoven with the age-old traditions of his native Armenian art. All this led to the formation of a unique Sarian style.
The worldview basis of Sarian's creative work — ideas of zest for life, of beauty, and of the immortality of God's earth, as well as the highest human and Christian values — is love and kindness. In his art, the humanistic ideas developed by humanity are expressed in a new way. The compilers of the album set their goal at guiding readers step by step into the creative life of the painter. It befell Sarian to survive two world wars and a lot of personal tragedies; but despite this, "like a sphinx, he greeted the rising sun every morning with unblinking eyes."
