The picture is rather conventional by its manner. It is not in the least the reflexion of the nature, but at the same time it is inspired by it. The white cliffs, the house built of the yellow local stone, the trees perching in the rock clefts reflect the character of the place near the Maritime Alps. Derain deliberately minimized the number of the colours in his palette leaving only yellow, brown, grey-blue and green to catch the colour gamma of this sunburnt scenery. In the composition of the cliffs, groups of the houses and trees we can feel the influence of cubism principles. However, the most noticeable in the picture is the influence of the Old Masters – the Sienna school primitivists. The trees placed naively on the cliff, the houses of the settlement, the characteristic trunk in the foreground of the composition give this specific work the resemblance with a many times enlarged detail of an Italian 15th century picture.
“Style is the constant movement from a human to the reality and vice versa, it is the eternal motion from subjective to objective and from objective to subjective”, Derain said. “Penetrating into the soul of the scenery I express my own soul. That is the style”.
