Benois Alexandre
Alexandre Benois is a painter and a graphic art-easel painter, an illustrator, a designer of the book, a craftsman of theatrical scenery, a director, an author of ballet libretto. Benois was as well as an outstanding Russian historian and West-European art one, a theorist and a great publicist, an acute critic, a prominent museum figure, an incomparable connoisseur of theatre, music and choreography. The main character trait of Alexandre Benois is all-absorbing love to art; the versatility of his knowledge was only an expression of this love. In all his work, in science, in art criticism, in each of his ideas Benois always was an artist. The contemporaries looked at him and saw an alive embodiment of artistry spirit.
