Vasily Tropinin (1776-1857)
Vasily Tropinin is a painter, a designer, and a portraitist. He was a bondsman firstly of the count I.I. Minih, then of the count I.I. Morkov. In 1823 he was delivered from servitude. V. Tropinin attended as a free-coming student a portrait classes in the Petersburg Academy of Applied Arts (1798-1804). He was taught by S.S. Shukin. Tropinin was especially a Moscow portraitist. His portraits were very popular, and some of them he copied once or twice. In Tropinin heritage there were various portraits: intimate and representative ones, one-figured and group-figured ones, peasant and merchant ones, children ones, fancy-dress ones. The work of Vasily Tropinin has an important role in the development of the democratic trends of Russian art of the 19th century.
