Igor Grabar (1871- 1960)
Igor Grabar entered the Academy of Applied Arts in 1894. Since 1895 he studied in the workshop of Ilea Repin. In the summer of 1895 Igor Grabar made trips to Berlin, Paris, Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, where he was shocked by the works of the Revival artists, the works of impressionists and postimpressionists. During 1896 — 1900s Grabar was travelling across Europe. He wanted to explore the world art in details and get the architectural education. In 1900 Grabar came back to Russia, and it was the beginning of the most creative period for him. Within twelve years (1913 — 1925) Grabar was the head of the Tretyakov Gallery. It was he who had changed the rules of a museum work to a great extent. He became a great artist, an art explorer, an art critic, a restorer, a teacher, a museum figure, a remarkable organizer, and an architect. In 1918 on Grabar's initiative the Central restoration workshops were created. He was connected with them all his life and nowadays they were named in his honour. Here many products of the Old Russian Art were found and kept.
