ROUSSEAU Henri (1844-1910) – French artist-primitive. His nickname “The Customs Officer Rousseau” - he’d been obliged by his working for the Parisian custom house. The self-educated artist, Rousseau began to paint at his forty, after his resignation. In 1885 he exhibited his copies of old masters’ paintings, had been made in Louvre by himself in a free Art Studio at Elisey fields. A year later he painted “The carnival evening”. In this painting there are some features of his future individual style: alternation of plans, placement of figures at the landscape’s background and carefully work under the all details of composition.
